CIIMAR aims to understand the physical, chemical and biological dynamics of the costal and oceanic environments, the impact of natural and anthropogenic disturbances, the sustained management of marine resources through the optimization of aquaculture and the biotechnological exploitation of these resources with environment and human health applications.
Study of the impact and fate of natural toxins and anthropogenic substances in the environment. Unraveling the mechanisms of toxicity and detoxification of natural toxins and anthropogenic substances such as oils, HNS substances and emerging pollutants. Development and standardization of new bioassays (from molecules to organisms) to efficiently detect contaminants and their effects. The compiled information may be used by environmental and human health authorities in risk analysis and ecosystem management.
The majority of CIIMAR laboratories / research groups are located at CIIMAR main building, but there are also groups located at the Faculty of Sciences, Instituto de Ciências Biomédicas Abel Salazar and Faculty of Engineering. The Marine Geology group is located at INETI/LNEG (Lisbon).
