Chemical inventories

Only the chemicals considered in inventories are legally allowed to be put on the market. This inventories legislation applies both to manufactures and importers of chemicals. In these regulations, chemicals can be considered as substances, preparations or mixtures. Once contemplated in a legally recognized inventory, such substances are known as "existing substance". However, if a substance is included in an inventory in one country it does not necessarily mean that the same is listed in the inventory of another country.

Table 1 shows a list of some of the well-known inventories included in the legislation related to the manufacture and importation of chemical substances.

These inventories usually consist of two parts: the public inventory, which is published on a regular basis, and the confidential listing, which is only available to the regulatory authority. Chemical substances are listed using either International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) nomenclature system or Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS) Registry.
