CIIMAR researcher joins the European Polar Board

Catarina Magalhães has been appointed as the national representative of the Foundation for Science and Technology on the European Polar Board.

Catarina Magalhães, researcher at CIIMAR, has been appointed as the national representative of the Foundation for Science and Technology on the European Polar Board, a European body dedicated to the strategic coordination of research in the Arctic and Antarctic.

With extensive experience in polar research and climate change, Catarina Magalhães has been participating in international programmes and scientific expeditions in the Arctic since 2010, contributing to the study of the impact of climate change on microbial communities and marine biogeochemical processes. She currently coordinates the Global Changes and Ecosystem Services research area at CIIMAR and leads the Microbiome Ecology and Biogeochemistry team.

The European Polar Board brings together scientific institutions and agencies from various European countries, promoting international collaboration in polar research, infrastructure development and scientific advice for public policies relating to the polar regions.

Catarina Magalhães’ appointment strengthens the Portuguese scientific community’s presence in international polar research networks and in the setting of European scientific priorities for the study of climate change and polar ecosystems.
