In this lecture, we explore how green roofs and walls are transforming urban spaces into more resilient, healthy, and sustainable environments. Through practical examples, we address the main benefits of these nature-based solutions, including improved thermal comfort, reduced stormwater runoff, increased urban biodiversity, and the promotion of human well-being. Case studies will be presented that demonstrate how integrating vegetation into architecture can effectively respond to the challenges of climate change and urbanization. A conversation about living science, green innovation, and the future of cities that flourish.

Cristina Calheiros é Investigadora no CIIMAR, Engenheira do Ambiente com Doutoramento em Biotecnologia, Embaixadora do Pacto Europeu para o Clima, Vice-presidente da ANCV e membro da direção da APRH Norte. Colabora com a Universidade de São José (Macau) e a FCUP. A sua investigação centra-se nas soluções baseadas na natureza, como coberturas e paredes verdes, fito-ETARs e ilhas flutuantes, focadas na resiliência dos territórios e adaptação climática. Trabalha ainda em fitorremediação, economia circular, educação ambiental, e turismo regenerativo.
