Coastal cities in the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development

The United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030) aims to reverse the current state of ocean degradation and faces the following challenges: combating marine pollution, protecting and restoring ecosystems and their biodiversity, ensuring healthy food for the future, developing a sustainable blue economy, increasing the resilience of coastal populations to marine risks and climate change, increasing knowledge of the ocean and developing a digital twin, expanding observation systems, promoting capacity building and knowledge sharing, and creating a closer relationship between society and the ocean. Coastal cities and communities play a central and fundamental role in achieving the goals of the Ocean Decade.
