Every day we use medicines, cosmetics, sunscreens, waterproof clothing and plastic packaging. Many of the chemical compounds found in these products end up entering the environment via wastewater and subsequently reaching rivers, estuaries and oceans. We refer to these compounds as Emerging Contaminants of Concern; they are substances increasingly detected in the environment, but whose effects are not yet fully understood. Although they occur in low concentrations, they can accumulate in organisms and ecosystems over time, raising new environmental concerns.
In this conversation, we will explore where these pollutants lurk in our daily lives, how they enter aquatic ecosystems, and how scientists study their effects on organisms and assess the potential risks to the environment and human health.
