Inter-comparison of Marine Plankton Metagenomic Methods

Type: Advanced Course
Date: 2017-09-11 to 2017-09-15
Location: CIIMAR

The 2017 edition of EMOSE will be held in Porto from 11th and 15th September, 2017 at the Interdisciplinary Centre of Marine and Environemental Research (CIIMAR, University of Porto).

The scientific objective is to run an inter-comparison of current trends and methods in marine plankton metagenomic analysis. The selected protocols include those used by Tara Oceans, Malaspina and the Ocean Sampling Day. Already published data from these projects will be complemented by a new set of data obtained from a comparative experiment of protocols used in the three initiatives. The bulk of the analyses will be done during a 5-day hands-on session in Porto, and a virtual research environment will be used to plan the analysis and to work-up a review paper. Together with the participants, the EMOSE team will use/explore existing open science resources such as open lab-books, open protocols, and virtual laboratory platforms.

The full program will be available on the 1st week of May.

A total of 12 early-career-scientists will be selected based on their experience in marine microbiome analysis and their current research activities. They should be postdocs or recently appointed researchers (Euromarine full or invited members). Participation on the 2017 edition of EMOSE is subject to selection by the Scientific Committee and special care will be taken to include participants with strong background in the protocols of Tara Oceans, Malaspina, Ocean Sampling Day and Earth Microbiome.
