Oceanus Seminar Series

Type: Conference
Date: 2017-07-21 to 2017-07-21

Iacopo Bertocci will present a seminar entitled "Passenger vs. driver model of invasions: an experimental test on the ‘devil’s tongue weed’, Grateloupia turuturu" at 12.00 am at CIIMAR facilities (level 3).

A main topic in the research on biological invasions is the ‘driver vs. passenger’ debate, namely whether an invasive species is actually able to drive drastic modifications to the biodiversity and functioning of the recipient systems, or it would become established and spread in habitats where native assemblages were already altered by natural or anthropogenic disturbances. This talk will illustrate how these alternative models were examined and disentangled through a set of recent manipulative experiments focused on the interaction between the invasive red alga Grateloupia turuturu and native assemblages from tide-pools along a rocky shore in the Porto area. It will also show how very basic and cheap tools and procedures can be use to effectively address extremely relevant ecological questions.
