The meeting at CIIMAR brought together scientists and policymakers to discuss priorities and challenges of the Blue Economy in Portugal

CIIMAR welcomed the Secretary-General of the Socialist Party, José Luís Carneiro, as part of the “Route for the Sea Economy” initiative, dedicated to consulting key stakeholders involved in the development of the Blue Economy in Portugal.

The visit included an institutional meeting, which was also attended by José Maria Costa, former Secretary of State for the Sea, and brought together entities that are part of the PREMI consortium – Smart Sea Regional Platform, led by CIIMAR.

The meeting provided a space for dialogue on the main challenges and opportunities of the Blue Economy, with one of its objectives being to identify priorities for the development of the sea sector in Portugal, as well as to understand CIIMAR’s institutional needs to ensure its sustainable growth. Through the exchange of perspectives between the scientific community and policymakers, key areas were discussed to strengthen innovation and sustainability in the national maritime sector.

During the meeting, José Luís Carneiro underlined the importance of ensuring stability and continuity in scientific and technological development processes. In this context, the need for long-term policies to ensure talent retention was emphasised, along with the monitoring of bioresources and the improvement of CIIMAR’s facilities, which were also identified as priorities. The Secretary-General of the Socialist Party further reinforced the relevance of the sector, stating his intention to “make this area an absolute national priority”.
