CHLOROFIT project officially kicks off to develop innovative microalgae-based nutraceuticals

The CHLOROFIT project officially hosted its kick-off meeting, bringing together partners from academia, research and industry to launch a collaborative effort focused on developing next-generation nutraceutical ingredients from microalgal chlorophyll compounds.

Over the next three years, CHLOROFIT will explore the potential of chlorophyll-derived compounds from microalgae as innovative ingredients to support metabolic health. The project also aims to optimise sustainable production methods, integrate digital tools into the development process and contribute to the creation of high-value solutions for the nutraceutical sector.

By combining cutting-edge research with industrial innovation, CHLOROFIT seeks to strengthen the role of microalgae as a sustainable source of bioactive compounds with significant potential for human health applications. CIIMAR will contribute its expertise in marine biotechnology and bioactivity assessment, working alongside the consortium to translate scientific knowledge into innovative solutions with societal and economic impact.

About the Consortium

The CHLOROFIT consortium includes seeral institutions like CIIMAR, Necton, GreenCoLab and CCG/ZGDV Institute, combining complementary expertise in microalgae biotechnology, bioactivity assessment, sustainable production processes and artificial intelligence.

This kick-off meeting was hosted by Necton and provided an opportunity for partners to align on the project’s scientific objectives, work plan and upcoming activities, establishing the roadmap for the months ahead. Participants also visited Necton’s production facilities, gaining first-hand insight into the industrial environment where several stages of the project’s research and development will be carried out.
