INSPIRE brings together science and sport in the fight against pollution in the Douro River

Between 11 and 14 September, the European consortium INSPIRE brought together partners from across Europe to discuss strategies for combating plastic pollution in rivers. This event also included the 6th General Assembly of the project, which was organised by CIIMAR, the institution leading the Portuguese case study in the Douro Estuary, in collaboration with Marina do Freixo.

The initiative coincided with the Douro Bridges Porto & Gaia Open Water, a National Open Water Circuit event held on 14 September. The INSPIRE project was one of the event’s sponsors, reinforcing its commitment to sustainability and the connection between science and society.

Athlete José Carlos Freitas, supported by the project, won the gold medal in the 4 km Masters H category, symbolising the intersection between scientific research, environmental awareness and sports practice.

With these actions, INSPIRE and CIIMAR reinforce the importance of involving local communities in the active protection of aquatic ecosystems and combating plastic pollution.
