Progress update on the National Nature Restoration Plan

The CIIMAR researcher Isabel Sousa Pinto, who chairs the Monitoring Committee of Portugal’s National Nature Restoration Plan, was recently received by the Minister for Environment and Energy to present a progress update on the development of this strategic plan.

The meeting reviewed the work currently underway as part of the plan’s preparation process.

About the National Nature Restoration Plan

The National Nature Restoration Plan follows the approval of the EU Nature Restoration Law in 2024 and aims to guide national efforts to restore degraded ecosystems across the country.

This plan will define national restoration targets in line with European commitments, including restoring a significant part of degraded habitats in the coming decades and improving knowledge of their conservation status. Marine ecosystems are expected to play a central role, as a large proportion of marine habitats in Portugal are currently considered to be in unfavourable conservation status.

In 2024, Isabel Sousa Pinto was invited by the Portuguese Government to chair the Monitoring Committee responsible for overseeing the development of the plan and ensuring dialogue with the scientific community and other stakeholders.
