Title: Surveying marine toxins: 50 years of harmful Algal Blooms (HABBs) in subantarctic ecosystems

n this presentation, we will try to explain the main facts that are occurred in the last 5 decades related with harmful algal blooms (HABs) in the subantarctic ecosystems of southern chilean Patagonia, check the main events, micro algae species involved, and review of historical data and recent experiments, including the results from the 2019 PROFAN cruise. We develop a hypothetical and conceptual model to illustrate climate-hydrologic-ocean interactions with implications for the estuarine environment of the Magellan region.

Name: Maximo Frangopulos

Dr Máximo Frangopulos, a researcher at the GAIA Antarctic Research Centre (CIGA) at the University of Magallanes, and also he is associate researcher at the Cape Horn International Centre (CHIC) and the BASE Millennium Institute, and his works is mainly focused on phytoplankton ecology. The main topic of his research has been the study of interactions between toxic phytoplankton and zooplankton, mainly toxic dinoflagellates and copepods, and the spatial distribution of toxic microalgae and emergent species, mainly in the sub-Antarctic region of channels and fjords, but now he is focusing on the identification of new potentially toxic microalgae in Antarctic and sub-Antarctic environment.

The seminar will take place at CIIMAR headquarters (Boca da Baleia Auditorium ).
