Instructor

Dr. Ana Margarida Branco

Dr. Ana Margarida Bento is a postdoctoral researcher at the Interdisciplinary Centre for Marine and Environmental Research (CIIMAR), where she leads the BriSK project – A Risk-based Methodology for Predicting Bridge Scour Risk in a Changing Climate, funded by FCT’s Stimulus for Individual Scientific Employment (6th edition). Her research integrates hydrological modeling, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and climate projections to increase the resilience of infrastructures.
Previously, she was a postdoctoral researcher on the POSEIDON project, and has led tasks at CIIMAR and the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP). Between 2022 and 2024, she coordinated the Offshore Structures and Foundations R&D unit.
She holds a PhD in Civil Engineering from FEUP, under the FCT InfraRisk Doctoral Program, in collaboration with the National Civil Engineering Laboratory (LNEC) and has since been a member of CIIMAR’s Scientific Committee. Her research focused on developing a semi-quantitative priority factor for assessing the risk of bridge erosion, using experimental and numerical approaches. She also holds a master’s degree in Civil Engineering (Hydraulics and Water Resources) from the Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), having carried out his dissertation at LNEC on the analysis of dam failure due to overtopping.

After completing her thesis, she undertook an IAESTE international internship in Brazil, where she contributed to the construction of irrigation dams.
In addition to research, she has taught at the Polytechnic Institute of Viana do Castelo and the Polytechnic Institute of Guarda (2023/24 and 2024/25), as well as co-supervising undergraduate and master’s research projects. She has participated in national projects such as NUMPIERS, InfraCrit and GIIP, collaborating with Infraestruturas de Portugal (IP), EDP and international institutions, including the Politecnico di Torino, Trinity College Dublin, the Graduate University of Advanced Technology (Iran) and the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU).
He is an active member of IAHR, PIANC, IABSE, APRH, RISCOS, EGU and the Order of Engineers. She is also a member of the Advisory Board of Water magazine (MDPI), the AQUARIUS Expert Team, the IAHR Europe Leadership Team and the Expert Panel of the IAHR Seal for Water Education and Training (UNESCO-IHP). She is associate editor of three scientific journals and editor-in-chief of IAHR Newsflash Europe. Her work, which bridges the gap between research and education, is reflected in 30 publications, a Scopus H-index of 8 and 164 citations (as of March 28, 2025).
