Diseases are currently the main threat to the sustainability of the aquaculture industry, causing major economic losses worldwide. Genetic and genomic tools can significantly contribute to reducing the severity and frequency of disease outbreaks. Here, I will discuss said genetic and genomic tools, focusing on genomic selection and genome editing, providing examples of how they can contribute to increase the disease resistance of aquaculture stocks based mostly on our research in Atlantic salmon.
