On 8 June, World Oceans Day, CIIMAR is organising a scientific monitoring and demonstration event with the collaboration of 8 sailing boats on a scientific tour between the Port of Leixões and Freixo Marina.
With the aim of raising awareness of active citizenship, citizen science and the role of marinas and their users in monitoring and protecting the ocean, CIIMAR has designed a scientific ocean monitoring tour to take place on 8 June, World Ocean Day, between the Port of Leixões and Freixo Marina.
On the same day, the United Nations Peace Boat will also dock at the Cruise Terminal and will accompany this scientific tour to the Freixo Marina, strengthening the message of local capacity for sustainability and interpersonal cooperation.
Planned programme:
10h00 – Reception of guests (sailors and authorities) and visit to CIIMAR Presentation of the CIIMAR Watch monitoring programme, speech by the Peace Boat and the authorities present.
11h00 – Departure of the sailing boats from the Port of Leixões Expected arrival at 12h30 at Freixo Marina, followed by a light lunch.
13h30-14h00 – Demonstrations of scientific equipment on board an observation vessel
14h00 – 16h00 – Thematic workshop: “The Ocean and Us: Science, Society and Environmental Policies” Debate on topics such as scientific monitoring, active citizenship and public policies to protect the oceans. Includes a practical session observing microplastics and zooplankton. Short speeches by organizations and authorities present at the workshop.
This event is focused on the users of the Marina and CIIMAR scientists.
