Biobanco Azul Português: guardião de tesouros marinhos

The Environmental Monitoring and Interpretation Center (CMIA) of Vila do Conde invites the entire community to visit the exhibition “Portuguese Blue Biobank: Guardian of Marine Treasures” on display at CMIA until September 26th.

This exhibition is a unique opportunity to get to know the Portuguese Blue Biobank, a national network of marine biological collections, up close. Led by CIIMAR of the University of Porto, within the scope of the Blue Bioeconomy Pact, a consortium financed by the PRR, this project’s mission is to preserve and enhance Portugal’s marine biological heritage.

The Portuguese Blue Biobank plays an essential role in the conservation of the biodiversity of our oceans and in scientific research. The marine biodiversity present in Portuguese collections thus reflects the largest blue biological heritage preserved at a national level, and constitutes an incalculable treasure from a scientific, educational and economic point of view.

By promoting the discovery of new species, medicines, and a thousand and one other ways of using marine biological resources, the Portuguese Blue Biobank aims to be the national collection of the future, contributing to Portugal’s advancement in terms of the development of the blue bioeconomy and the conservation of the Oceans, as well as the species that inhabit them.

Come and discover this unique heritage and understand the importance of preserving our marine biodiversity!
