On 7 February, the NIAF team project gathered at CIIMAR to discuss the main advances after one year of work.
CIIMAR NIAF project was ranked as the best national project submitted to FCT in the Environmental Sciences panel in the 2021 call.
On 7 February, the team gathered at CIIMAR to discuss the main advances after one year of work. More especifically, during this period the potential of compounds patented to become less toxic alternatives to biocides currently used in marine coatings was evaluated, with the objective to prevent the formation of biofouling on surfaces submerged in water.
The project, led by Marta Correia da Silva, researcher at CIIMAR and professor at the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Porto (FFUP), brings together three research teams from CIIMAR, as well members of FFUP and members of CESPU.
The success in optimizing the production process is noticeable, as the project team managed to increase the scale and make the synthesis process green. The discovery of the biodegradability of one of the compounds, and the preliminary indication that the compounds do not cause endocrine disruption as many biocides, are essential criteria for obtaining approval by the European Chemicals Agency.
