CIIMAR partners with the iconic sailing competition during its stop in Northern Portugal.
For the first time, The Ocean Race Europe, considered one of the most demanding international sailing competitions, will pass through northern Portugal, with a 2-hour stop scheduled for August 20th at the Porto Cruise Terminal, in Matosinhos. CIIMAR will be associated with this initiative, contributing with a scientific component to the parallel events that will take place during the sailors’ stop in Matosinhos.
In addition to the sporting aspect and the impact it has on tourism, The Ocean Race Europe has a strong connection to science and ocean sustainability, promoting various actions aimed at advocating for ocean rights, its protection, and restoration. With these shared goals, CIIMAR joins The Ocean Race and the events that will be held during the “fly-by” in Matosinhos.
The 2025 edition of the race starts in Kiel, Germany, and promises to connect Europe from north to south, from the Baltic Sea to Boka Bay, Montenegro, passing through the English Channel, the Atlantic Ocean, and the Mediterranean, in a route under the motto “Connecting Europe.”
The press conference presenting the event took place on April 23rd, 2025, and was attended by Luísa Salgueiro, Mayor of Matosinhos, Luís Pedro Martins, President of Visit Porto & North of Portugal, Richard Brisius, Chairman of The Ocean Race, and Pedro Machado, Secretary of State for Tourism in Portugal. CIIMAR was represented by the researcher Sandra Ramos, who participated in a roundtable alongside Mariana Lobato, Olympic sailor, and Luís Monteiro, Director of the Environment and Energy Efficiency Department at the Port Authority of Douro, Leixões, and Viana do Castelo.
More information about the events associated with the fly-by in Matosinhos will be revealed soon.
