CIIMAR Celebrated World Ocean Day with a special activity bringing together scientists and sailors
Organized in partnership with Marina do Freixo and as part of CIIMAR’s 25th anniversary celebrations, the event aimed to raise awareness about the importance of Ocean monitoring, targeting both recreational and professional sailors. The initiative was also joined by the Peace Boat, which docked at the Porto Cruise Terminal on that day.
The morning began at CIIMAR, with a welcome session for participants, a presentation of the CIIMAR Watch monitoring programme, and a brief tour of the facilities. There was also a presentation about the activities carried out by the Peace Boat. This was followed by a scientific boat trip to Marina do Freixo aboard seven sailboats, with the participation of CIIMAR researchers and members of the Peace Boat. Along the way, the sailboats traveled up the Douro River, through the heart of Porto.
At the marina, researchers Luís R. Vieira and Isabel Iglesias led the workshop “The Ocean and Us: Science, Society, and Environmental Policies,” which focused on scientific monitoring, citizenship, and public policy. The session encouraged audience participation and included a hands-on component, with microscope observations of microplastics and zooplankton.
A video recap of this celebration is available on CIIMAR’s Instagram, showcasing the main highlights of the activity.
