What is Ocean Expert?

Science Education of Children for Ocean Stewardship:
in Support of the Sustainable Ocean Economy

Ocean Expert is a UNESCO Chair at the University of Porto, coordinated by CIIMAR. It is a project and team partnering with UNESCO to advance ocean knowledge and education in support of the blue economy. This area has been identified as a priority for both the institution and UNESCO.

Research Development

The Chair undertakes research to address critical gaps in ocean science, governance, and practices to meet relevant Decade challenges through cutting-edge research projects and the development of new research areas.

Ocean Science Education and Training

Ocean Expert promotes the education of children, youth, civil society, and targeted stakeholders, with particular attention to disadvantaged groups at national and regional levels, taking into consideration UNESCO global priorities, notably Africa and gender, through the establishment and promotion of distance learning courses.

Integrated Approach

Ocean Expert draws on innovative, cutting-edge ocean research to foster ocean literacy and develop compelling content that bridges science and society. Among other aims, we seek to develop and facilitate access to tools that raise ocean awareness among younger generations, empowering them as critical agents of change and active participants in the future stewardship of our ocean and its resources.

Ocean Expert focuses on

INTEGRATED SYSTEM OF RESEARCH
The Chair promotes an integrated system of research, training, information and documentation on ocean science education, ocean literacy and sustainable ocean economy.
NETWORKING AND COLLABORATION
The Chair promotes collaboration between leading institutions in Portugal and in other Europe countries, Africa, Latin America, Asia, the Pacific, and other regions of the world, supporting the implementation of priority UNESCO programmes.
OCEAN LITERACY
The Chair supports the inclusion of ocean topics in school curricula in Portugal and the Portuguese Speaking Countries Community (CPLP), and develops activities to the public in collaboration with public and private institutions and Foundations within the science-art nexus.
EDUCATION AND LIFELONG TRAINING
The Chair contributes to capacity building in ocean science and education by supervising postgraduate students and developing lifelong training for teachers, educators, and sea professionals offered by the Ocean Teacher Global Academy (OTGA).
