Title: Hierarchical control of microbial community assembly
Name: Sammy Pontrelli
Specialized biopolymer degraders that decompose complex forms of organic matter are responsible for initiating the flux of nutrients into heterotrophic microbial communities in many environments. However, we have a limited understanding of the extent by which degraders control the downstream assembly of the community beyond polymer breakdown. We explore this by establishing an 18-member model chitin degrading community, and we dissect the metabolic relationships between different members using high throughput metabolomics. In this talk, I will present our findings that demonstrate how specialized degraders shape the dynamics of community assembly through different modes of metabolic crossfeeding.
