The implementation of social and environmental sustainability policies and best practices in a research center

Environmental and Social Sustainability is a core value of the mission of CIIMAR – the Interdisciplinary Center for Marine and Environmental Research – which aims to actively contribute, through its research and current activity, to the implementation and dissemination of the values associated with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The implementation of CIIMAR’s Sustainability Policy is coordinated by the Environmental and Social Sustainability Office, in close coordination with the Directorate and different organic units and internal services. CIIMAR is also an active member of “Green Labs Portugal”, an association that promotes sustainable practices in research laboratories.

This session will present the measures implemented to reduce the center’s ecological footprint and create conditions for a healthier, more inclusive and respectful work environment for employees, as well as the activities and projects aimed at applied research and the transfer of scientific knowledge to society in order to promote sustainable development and biodiversity regenerative practices. These measures include optimizing water and energy consumption, promoting the circular economy and sustainable mobility, valuing diversity and equity in the workplace and developing educational and ecosystem restoration programs with a high social impact. The implementation of these actions is essential to ensure coherence between CIIMAR’s scientific mission and institutional responsibility in the face of current environmental and social challenges, contributing to building a more sustainable, inclusive and resilient future.
