Social media has become one of today’s most influential channels for sharing scientific knowledge and raising awareness about the ocean and the environment. To better understand how these platforms are used across the scientific community, the European Marine Board Communication Panel (EMBCP), is leading the Survey on Social Media Usage in Science Environments with na important involvement from the CIIMAR Image, Communication and Outreach Office and the Institute of Oceanography and Fisheries (in Croatia).
This international study aims to gather perspectives from a wide range of stakeholders involved in marine and environmental sciences, including researchers, science communicators, policy-makers, journalists, educators, industry representatives, and NGOs. By examining both individual and institutional practices, the survey seeks to map how social media contributes to science communication, outreach, and engagement.
The results will support communication teams in research and innovation organisations in identifying which platforms and approaches are most effective for reaching their audiences and enhancing meaningful dialogue about science. Following data analysis, the main findings will be published on the European Marine Board website.
