Group Leader

Ana Bio is a biologist, graduated at the University of Aveiro, who obtained her PhD at Utrecht University, the Netherlands, with a thesis on statistical species-environment modelling. Since then, her research interests evolved in the fields of species-environment relationships; estuarine and coastal ecosystems and erosion risk assessment; and underwater bioacoustics. Main activities include: coastal and ocean monitoring; empirical data analysis and statistical modelling; morphodynamics and risk assessment; remote sensing data analysis; and Geographical Information Systems (GIS).

The REMORA project aims to transform the monitoring and management of aquatic resources in Portugal and across the European Union, addressing the need for innovative and sustainable solutions. REMORA seeks to improve the efficiency, sustainability and safety of aquatic operations by using swarm robotics for monitoring and enhancing aquatic systems, and by creating detailed digital twins to support informed and predictive management. The project brings together a multidisciplinary team led by Ingeniarius, a specialist in robotic systems, and includes as consortium members the Institute of Systems and Robotics of the University of Coimbra, which develops swarm robotics and human–swarm interaction algorithms; the CIIMAR, which promotes the sustainable management of aquatic resources by monitoring ecosystem health; and Riamaris, an aquaculture company with scientific and commercial interest in assessing these innovative solutions. This joint effort aims to reach a functional technological level in a representative environment (TRL 6), demonstrating the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed solutions. The REMORA project will run over 36 months, allowing for a methodical and systematic assessment of R&D tasks in a real-world context, with a technological perspective focused on commercial valorisation. The integration of the partners’ complementary areas of expertise will ensure the development of innovative, applicable solutions that contribute to the sustainability and efficiency of the blue economy sector.
