Café com Ciência with Luísa Valente | Online
Aquaculture can play a key role in food security in Portugal, contributing to more sustainable fish and shellfish production and helping to reduce dependence on imports. By enabling the controlled farming of species such as sea bass, sea bream, and mussels, this activity ensures a stable supply of safe, high-quality protein. In addition, aquaculture can support local economies, create jobs in coastal areas, and encourage technological innovation in the food sector, thus becoming an essential component of a balanced diet and sustainable development in the country.
Luísa M. P. Valente is a biologist and Full Professor at ICBAS – University of Porto. She conducts research on fish nutrition and sustainable aquaculture, focusing on functional foods, growth and muscle quality, environmental impact, circular economy, and the One Health approach.
