CIIMAR, represented by its director Professor Vitor Vasconcelos, and researcher Aldo Barreiro, went on a mission to the Chilean Patagonia region, in Punta Arenas, during the last week of November 2023. During the visit, as part of the project Red de Colaboración IBERCHILE: fortalecimiento de las ciencias del mar en un océano cambiante (ANID-FOVI 220159), funded by the Chilean government, there was an opportunity to meet with researchers from the Instituto de Estudios de la Patagonia, the Centro de Investigación GAIA Antártica (CIGA), the Instituto de Biodiversidad de Ecosistemas Antárticos y Subantárticos (BASE) and the Universidad de Magallanes (UMAG), in Punta Arenas.

On November 28, a seminar was held within the framework of the IBERCHILE network on the theme: Proyecciones para la investigación associativa, in which CIIMAR researchers Professor Vitor Vasconcelos, Aldo Barreiro, and Elsa Froufe participated.

At the meeting with the vice-rector for research, innovation, and postgraduate studies at the University of Magallanes, Claudia Estrada, with the director of the Department of Sciences and Natural Resources, Bibiana Jara, and also attended by colleagues from the University of Vigo, who are also partners in the IBERCHILE project, it was agreed to establish a collaboration protocol between CIIMAR and UMAG, as soon as possible, to formalize collaboration in areas of common interest in research and innovation, as well as in advanced training.

During the visit there was also the opportunity to carry out fieldwork in the intertidal zones of the Strait of Magellan, at its point of confluence with the Atlantic Ocean – Punta Dungeness – to collect samples.
