CIIMAR contributes to the creation of new cetacean protection areas

Among the 33 newly designated Important Marine Mammal Areas in the Northeast Atlantic, four are located within Portuguese territory.

The working group of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) for Marine Mammal Protected Areas, which includes researchers from CIIMAR, has approved the creation of 33 new Important Marine Mammal Areas (designated IMMAs) in the Northeast Atlantic Ocean. Four of them include Portuguese territory.

Researchers are now calling on governments to consider these IMMAs in marine spatial planning, the creation of marine protected areas, and the conduct of environmental impact assessments.
