Cláudia Serra – Cláudia Serra has dedicated her scientific career to the study of a particular group of microorganisms, the spore-forming bacteria, and their biotechnological applications in animal health. Claudia Serra completed her PhD at ITQB-NOVA (Oeiras, Portugal) in collaboration with the company DSM Nutritional Products (Basel, Switzerland). She joined CIIMAR in 2013 as part of the Fish Nutrition and Welfare group, where she applied her knowledge to solve aquaculture problems, namely the occurrence of diseases. Today she coordinates the MBAqua Research Group – Microbiology and Biotechnology in Aquaculture, and is an Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto.
João Saraiva – João Saraiva is a fish ethologist with a special interest in welfare. João lectures Ethology at University of Algarve, leads the Fish Ethology and Welfare Group at CCMAR, and is the president of the FishEthoGroup Association. João’s main focus is in the application of ethological knowledge into the assessment and improvement of the welfare of aquatic animals (in the wild, in aquaculture and in fisheries). He coordinates R&D in these areas and performs consultancy for the EU and international stakeholders.
