What spores can do for us? More than you imagine!
The famous quote by Louis Pasteur, “Gentlemen, the microbes will have the last word,” illustrates just how powerful and fascinating bacterial organisms are. Though microscopic and of simple organization, bacteria are found virtually everywhere, even in places seemingly unsuitable for sustaining life. Their single cell contains all the information necessary for growth, reproduction, and rapid adaptation to new ecological niches. Since natural habitats are constantly changing, with large fluctuations in conditions such as nutrient availability, temperature, or pH, bacteria have developed adaptive responses to ensure the continuity of their species. One of the most sophisticated survival strategies is the formation of bacterial spores. In this conversation, we will introduce these spore-forming microorganisms: what they are, how they form, where they are found, and how they can be used to solve various human problems, with a focus on aquaculture, a growing industry that keeps pace with the increase in the global population but faces significant challenges in sustainable development, particularly in terms of animal nutrition and health.
