The second season of CIIMAR Odysseys premiered its first episode this July, offering a glimpse into the scientific work behind the TwinDEEPS expedition to the Gorringe Bank, one of Europe’s tallest underwater mountains.
This Instagram-based series, which brings audiences closer to the reality of going on an expedition, through the eyes of researchers, returns with a new season focused on deep-sea exploration.
Narrated by the researcher José Queirós, the first episode traces the story back to the day the RV Pelagia arrived at the Port of Leixões, marking the end of the campaign. From there, it rewinds to the weeks of intense preparation that led up to departure, offering a rapid behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to carry out a scientific mission like this.
Inspired by a digital logbook format, this short-reels series captures the atmosphere of life on board, the challenges faced, and the spirit of discovery that drives ocean science. Throughout the month of July, new episodes will be released on CIIMAR’s Instagram, offering a closer look at the tools, methods and people behind the campaign.
Following the success of its first season, which documented the researcher Ksenija Vučković’s first Antarctic expedition, this second edition features a refreshed format: three episodes, three narrators, and a final Q&A segment built around questions submitted by the public via Instagram comments and direct messages.
More than just a communication tool, CIIMAR Odysseys uses digital storytelling to bring science closer to people. Aimed especially at students, young adults and early-career researchers, the series offers a first-hand look at a world that remains out of reach for many, but sparks the curiosity of most.
