Analytical Laboratories

CIIMAR has well equipped analytical laboratories, with different analytical equipments, including Segmented Flow Analyzers (SFA), Atomic Absorption Spectrometers (AAS), Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometers (LC-MS/MS) and HPLC, Gas Chromatographs with different detectors (Flame Ionization Detection (GC-FID) and Mass spectrometry), Organic Elemental Analyzer-Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometer (EA-IRMS), that enables the quantification of a vast array of compounds in different matrices with multiple purposes.

These equipments are used by CIIMAR researchers to pursuit their research within the three CIIMAR Research Lines allowing, for instance, the quantification of pollutants in different ecosystem compartments, the establishment of toxicity endpoints, the evaluation of ecosystems recovery measures through biotechnology tools, the identification of bioactive compounds or the evaluation of seafood nutritional status, combining chemical and biological data in a multidisciplinary approach

Principal Investigator
Team Leader

Marisa Almeida is a senior researcher at CIIMAR with ca. 140 international publications. With a PhD in Chemistry (obtained in 2003) her main research area is phytoremediation, participating actively in studies that aim to potentiate the use of these biotechnological tools as nature-based solutions to improve and recover aquatic environments contaminated with different pollutants. Her expertise is on environmental chemistry applied to coastal and estuarine environments and on phytoremediation of contaminants in natural and constructed wetlands for environmental recovery. She also actively participates in dissemination and communication activities in the frame of CIIMAR outreach projects on water and ocean literacy.
