CIIMAR hosts residency for journalists from FRONTIERS

CIIMAR will host the third edition of the FRONTIERS Science Journalism Residency Programme.

CIIMAR will host the third edition of the FRONTIERS Science Journalism Residency Programme, an international initiative that promotes closer ties between science journalism and advanced research. This is the first time that a Portuguese institution hosts this programme.

The application of journalist Siddhant Pusdekar (India) was supported by CIIMAR and selected for the third round of this programme. FRONTIERS’ support will enable the development of the science journalism project “Microbes at the ends of a rapidly changing world”, focused on the study of microorganisms in ecosystems affected by rapid environmental change. The residency will last three to five months, during which the journalist will work immersively with research teams at the research centre.

About the FRONTIERS Science Journalism Residency Programme

The FRONTIERS Science Journalism Residency Programme is funded by the European Research Council (ERC) and awards a monthly grant of up to €4,000 for the implementation of selected projects, encouraging the production of rigorous and independent science journalism in the context of the host entities.

The third edition of the programme selected seven early-career journalists from six countries from among 31 applications. The projects cover cutting-edge research areas ranging from microbiology and biogeochemical cycles to neuroscience, health and digital policy.

By participating in the FRONTIERS Science Journalism Residency Programme, CIIMAR strengthens its commitment to scientific communication and the promotion of ocean literacy and the challenges affecting marine ecosystems and the global environment.
