During the month of June, amateur and professional photographers are invited to share nature photographs with a free license, so that they are accessible on all Wikimedia projects and can illustrate encyclopedic articles on Wikipedia, as well as other educational purposes. In 2024, CIIMAR will collaborate with the selection of the honorable mention in the “Oceans” category for photos of marine life and habitats.
The competition takes place in two distinct phases: in the first phase, the national winners are selected and awarded; and in the second phase, the winners are selected from among the best in each country. The first edition of the competition took place in 2013 in Ukraine and the following year the competition went international. In 2024, the competition involves 47 countries. In Portugal, the first edition took place in 2015 and became an annual event in Portugal in 2018.
In this year’s edition, the photos in the competition must be submitted between June 1 and 30, following the instructions available on the event’s website. Each competitor can submit as many photos as they like, as long as they respect the rules of the competition and Wikimedia Commons.
The images will be analysed by a jury in August, at the end of which they will be announced and contacted by the organization.
