CIMAR-LA Seminar

The Open Science Tools Series

The Open Science Tools Series

The Open Science Tools Series combines insights into digital tools shaping the future of Open Science with hands-on training from CIMAR-LA’s advanced training programs. Following this event, an advanced training course powered by GLIM-BioData.pt will provide practical instruction on the use of eLabFTW.

Talks
  • Cymon J. Cox (CCMAR) and Maria Paola Tomasino (CIIMAR) will introduce CIMAR-LA’s approach to Open Science, highlighting current practices and future directions.

  • Nicolas Carpi (Deltablot, CEO) will present eLabFTW, an open-source electronic lab notebook, and discuss how it supports data organization, reproducibility, and collaborative research.

About the Speakers
Cymon J. Cox
Cymon is a phylogeneticist, botanist, bioinformatician, and Open Science advocate. He studied at the University of Bangor, the University of Reading, Duke University, and the Natural History Museum in London. Since 2008, he has led a research group at CCMAR in Faro. His early work examined the molecular phylogenetics of deep lineages, including the origins of eukaryotes and land plants. He currently focuses on data management for Horizon Europe projects and on how Research Infrastructures support the European Open Science Cloud and European Commission Open Science initiatives.
Maria Paola Tomasino
Maria coordinates the Open Science and Data Management Office at CIIMAR, where she supports researchers in Research Data Management (RDM) and Open Science by providing training and guidelines. As Data Steward for CIIMAR WATCH – Monitoring Platform, she ensures the interoperability of marine data and metadata while advancing the adoption of FAIR and Open Science principles.
Nicolas Carpi
Nicolas started his career as an engineer at the Institut Curie Research Center in Paris, France. He soon realized that there was a tool missing from his daily workflow: an electronic laboratory notebook that could keep track of experimental procedures, materials, and results. To solve this problem, he created eLabFTW, an open-source electronic laboratory notebook. He developed eLabFTW as a side project until 2019, when the success of the software pushed him to create Deltablot to support eLabFTW and its growing community of users. Nicolas’ goal is to create the ultimate ELN by providing high quality support and hosting to users while keeping the software free and open source. As a key part of this objective, Deltablot participates in various Research Data Management projects such as The ELN Consortium.
