Cetaceans, the iconic group that includes whales, dolphins, and porpoises, are strictly protected, strategically important, and sentinel species, playing essential roles in ecosystem functioning, including enhancing productivity and carbon sequestration. Nevertheless, their populations are threatened by multiple stressors with cumulative effects. Changes in cetacean distribution and signs of deteriorating health can serve as early warnings of future population decline, but these signals often go undetected through traditional monitoring. With the advent of the digital era, new forms of monitoring have emerged, offering unique opportunities to implement innovative methodologies for the benefit of cetacean populations in the oceans.

This talk will address the use of non-invasive and innovative technologies to tackle monitoring challenges related to cetacean distribution and health, as well as the challenges inherent to these methodologies and future developments in this field.
