With Mariana Alves Reis & Luísa Custódio
3rd Floor Auditorium (CIIMAR) + Online
“Cyanobacteria: A Source of Innovation in Bioactive Compound Discovery”, by Mariana Alves Reis.
“Halophytes and One Health: Integrative Approaches for Human, Veterinary, Environmenta”, by Luísa Custódio.
Mariana Alves Reis – Mariana Reis holds a PhD in Pharmacy from the University of Lisbon. Since 2016, she has been researching the natural products chemistry of microalgae and cyanobacteria at CIIMAR. These organisms produce a diverse range of organic compounds with substantial potential for biotechnological applications. Her drug discovery approach integrates multi-omics techniques with traditional methods, alongside bioactivity-guided strategies. Mariana actively participates in several projects aimed at developing microalgae and cyanobacteria-based solutions to address challenges in human health and environmental sustainability.
Luísa Custódio – Luísa Custódio is a principal researcher specializing in blue biotechnology, focusing on the bioprospecting of marine and halophytic plants for bioactive compounds with pharmacological and nutraceutical potential. With a PhD in Biotechnology, her research integrates metabolomics, in vitro bioactivity assays, ethnopharmacology and saline cultivation to explore natural products for applications in human and animal health. She has significantly contributed to the identification of antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anticancer metabolites, aiming to develop sustainable biotechnological solutions from marine and saline-adapted resources.
