CIIMAR’s Neptune Seminar with Sofía Hernández

Title: Too hot to handle? Estimating thermal tolerance in Kelps

The increasing frequency and intensity of climate change-driven extreme weather events threaten the survival of key species worldwide. In particular, marine heatwaves have already caused mass mortality events among both fauna and flora. Recent frameworks have reshaped how we assess the accumulation of thermal stress in ectothermic organisms. However, these frameworks have not yet been applied to the study of macroalgae. For marine forest species, accurately determining specific thermal tolerance thresholds is crucial for both the protection and improved management of these essential habitat-forming species.

Name: Sofía Hernández

Sofía Hernández, a PhD student at the Benthic Ecology Lab, researches how thermal resilience affects the distribution of key marine forest species across latitudinal gradients. Passionate about marine ecosystem dynamics and Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) to combat climate change, she aims to develop sustainable management strategies that enhance coastal biodiversity while supporting thriving human societies.
