Oceanus Seminar Series – 20 Dec

Oceanus Seminar series | 20 Dec 2023 | Sofia Teixeira | 11h30

Title: Electrochemical sensors as a platform for improving Animal Welfare

Reducing the reliance on veterinary drugs in farm animals and fish is vital for improving their well-being and health, with the added benefit of decreasing the presence of these drugs in the human food chain.
Electrochemical sensors can provide real-time continuous monitoring, by coupling a chemically selective layer to an electrochemical transducer. However, in order for the benefits of electrochemical sensors to be realised, a new generation of sensors and systems is required. New sensor design and fabrication processes compatible with wearable, minimally invasive and implantable systems are required.
In this talk, Dr Sofia Teixeira will discuss her work to develop new electrochemical sensors as part of the Ignition Horizon Europe project.

Name: Sofia Teixeira

Dr. Teixeira is a Senior Researcher at Tyndall National Institute, where she focuses on advancing electrochemical biosensors tailored for a wide range of biomedical and aquaculture applications. Sofia received her PhD from Swansea University in 2014, specialising in graphene biosensors. Upon graduation she was appointed a national research Fellow at Swansea University, contributing to the advancement of epigenetic biomarker screening tools for the diagnosis of ovarian cancer. Her expertise lies in sensor fabrication, electrochemically enhancing immune diagnostics, and sample processing.

The seminar will take place at CIIMAR headquarters (Boca da Baleia Auditorium).
