CIIMAR’s Oceanus Seminar with Ana Luísa Patrício Silva | Boca da Baleia

Impact of Microplastics in the Environment: Separating scientific facts from fiction

Microplastics are now widely reported across environmental compartments, including soils, freshwaters, marine systems, air, food, and drinking water. Their pervasive detection has prompted growing attention to potential ecological and biological interactions; however, interpretation of the available evidence remains constrained by substantial methodological and analytical heterogeneity. This presentation provides an overview of current ecotoxicological findings and the analytical approaches used in microplastics research, with an emphasis on recent methodological developments and persistent limitations that affect data quality, comparability, and inference.

Ana Luísa Patrício Silva (CESAM & DBio, University of Aveiro)

Ana Patrício Silva is an assistant researcher in the Departmet of Biology and Centre for Environmental and Marine Studies (CESAM) at the University of Aveiro. She holds a degree in Biology and Geology, an MSc in Biodiversity and Genetic Resources, and a PhD in Biology. Her research combined ecotoxicology, analytical chemistry, and biotechnology to assess the environmental impacts of plastic and e-waste pollution; and develop biobased, sustainable remediation strategies.
