CIIMAR’s Oceanus Seminar with Francisco Leitão | Boca da Baleia, CIIMAR
Predicting the eco-socioeconomic impacts of climate change on coastal fisheries in mainland Portugal
Francisco Leitão (Centro de Ciências do Mar, University of Algarve)
Francisco Leitão is an Assistant Professor at the University of Algarve and a researcher at CCMAR. His career spans fisheries biology, marine ecology and the ecological and socioeconomic impacts of climate change on coastal fisheries. Beginning at Portugal’s fisheries research institute, IPMA – IPIMAR, he studied small-scale fisheries, fishing impacts and artificial reefs before focusing on climate-driven changes in marine resources and fishing communities. He has led projects, linking ecological assessments with fisheries vulnerability and adaptation to climate change. His connection to the sea extends beyond research and teaching: he has participated in numerous scientific cruises, worked aboard commercial fishing vessels and completed hundreds of dives.
