Benjamín Costas completed a Masters in Aquaculture by the University of Algarve in 2006, and in 2011 achieved a PhD degree in Animal Science by the University of Porto. Benjamín Costas is currently Principal Researcher at CIIMAR and Head of Aquatic Animal Health, a young and strongly motivated team highlighting nutritional immunology as main research line. Dr. Costas is passionate about aquatic animal health and welfare and is actually coordinating several national and international projects in those topics. Main research is targeting novel strategies to improve fish disease resistance and welfare as well as on non-invasive biomarkers of animal health.

The FORTIFISH project aims to develop fortified functional foods that promote the well-being and health of marine fish (sea bass and sea bream) and zebrafish. This innovative project focuses on the formulation of bioactive peptide-fortified foods for the early stages of sea bass, sea bream and zebrafish, previously demonstrated in the NOSTRESS project (ALG-01-0247 -FEDER-047122) as capable of reducing the impact of stress factors and improving production efficiency from the early stages of fish development.

The FORTIFISH project was created to develop fortified functional feeds that promote the well-being and health of marine fish (European seabass and gilthead seabream) as well as zebrafish. This innovative project focuses on formulating feeds fortified with bioactive peptides for the early life stages of sea bass, gilthead seabream, and zebrafish. These peptides were previously demonstrated in the NOSTRESS project (ALG-01-0247-FEDER-047122) to be capable of reducing the impact of stress factors and improving production efficiency from the very first stages of fish development.
