Director of the Team of Blue Biotechnology and Health (BBE) of CIIMAR.
Main research: cyanobacteria secondary metabolites: toxins and molecules with biotechnological applications. Director of the LEGE culture collection comprising more than 2000 strains of cyanobacteria and microalgae. Published 490 papers in Biotechnology and Ecotoxicology. Coordinator of two H2020 projects: RISE and ERA Chair.
Director of the Doctoral Program in Marine Biotechnology and Aquaculture (U Porto and U Minho).

PREI REM is the Regional Platform for Smart Specialisation dedicated to the area of Marine Resources and Economy. Its mission is to support CCDR-Norte in developing the entrepreneurial discovery process associated with defining investment priorities, particularly with regard to technological and scientific infrastructure. The PREMI – Smart Sea Regional Platform project aims to ensure the promotion of PREI REM, creating the necessary conditions for its regular functioning as a collective structure for formulating recommendations and proposals for lines of action in this priority area.

The actions aim, within the scope of PREI’s fundamental mandate, to identify guidelines, priorities and anchor projects for the region’s smart specialisation in the field of “Marine Resources and Economy”.
The proposed actions, in accordance with the framework presented in the call for proposals, are as follows:
• A1 – Management and promotion of PREMI
• A2 – Assessment, safeguarding and enhancement of existing resources, capacity building of stakeholders and dissemination of results
• A3 – Enhancement of smart specialisation chains and strengthening of the regional innovation system
• A4 – The skills needed to enhance the region’s blue economy
This initiative thus aims to contribute in a concrete way to defining investment priorities and regional support, strengthening the regional innovation ecosystem and skills for smart specialisation in the area of marine resources and economy.
