Garbage Ideas: Transforming Mediterranean Agricultural Wastes into Aquaculture Resources

Food security is one of the most pressing challenges for a growing global population. Ensuring sufficient, quality food requires efficient and sustainable production systems. Aquaculture provides over half of the world’s aquatic foods, with a rising consumption rate of these foods, demand might soon outpace production. Meeting this demand requires new sustainable practices, and a surprising solution may lie in our garbage. Agricultural waste comes in diverse forms and can play a key role in a circular economy with aquaculture. They can provide interesting nutritional value that can be enhanced, serve as fermentation feedstock to produce functional compounds, have antioxidant and immunostimulant activities and more. This presentation will explore current advances in transforming agricultural waste into valuable resources for aquaculture.

Diogo Moreira Filipe (CIIMAR/B2E Colab)

Diogo Filipe is a curious and motivated researcher with a passion for developing innovative circular-economy solutions to address future food security challenges. During his MSc and PhD studies, he conducted research on wastes from the ethanol, brewery, wine, and olive industries, employing various biotechnological tools such as solid-state fermentation and NADES to recover functional compounds, produce enzymes, and enhance the nutritional value of these wastes for applications in aquaculture nutrition, immunology, and product quality.
