Blue Young Talent returns in 2026 with a new edition to support training in marine sciences

CIIMAR is launching another edition of the Blue Young Talent programme.

CIIMAR is launching another edition of the Blue Young Talent (BYT) programme, reinforcing its support for scientific training and the integration of students into research in the fields of marine and environmental sciences and biotechnology.

Following the call for applications for the BYT-PhD programme, held in January 2026, the BYT programme is now accepting applications for the stream aimed at undergraduate students, whilst also continuing the BYTplus stream, intended for students at the start of their master’s degree who wish to undertake their dissertation within a research context at CIIMAR. Applications for the BYT and BYTplus programmes will be open from 20 April to 29 May 2026.

BYT promotes students’ direct participation in projects carried out by CIIMAR teams, providing exposure to interdisciplinary research environments and access to specialised scientific infrastructure. Throughout the duration of the scholarship, the students selected for the programme also take part in activities designed to develop skills in scientific communication, innovation and engagement with the professional world.

The BYT programme, aimed at undergraduate students at the University of Porto (Universidade do Porto), covers fields such as marine biotechnology, toxicology, aquatic science and ocean management. The BYTplus programme, meanwhile, is open to students from national higher education institutions, enabling them to join CIIMAR research projects from the start of their master’s degree.
The BYT-PhD programme, for which applications were accepted earlier this year, focuses on a competitive doctoral programme that enables research to be carried out in conjunction with nine doctoral programmes at the University of Porto.
BYT is supported by partner organisations such as Soja Portugal and the Amadeu Dias Foundation, which provide funding for the scholarships awarded to selected students.

Further information on applications and regulations is available on the BYT website.
