CIIMAR’s Oceanus Seminar with Fernando Coreixas de Moraes | 3rd Floor Auditorium, CIIMAR
The audience will have access to scientific research conducted at Marine Protected Areas in Brazil, including coastal and oceanic islands distributed from the Equator to the Tropic of Capricorn. In contrast, a view of the Cape Verde Archipelago will be presented based on an expedition aboard the R/V Antea (France) to survey the local marine fauna. Among these locations in Brazil, highlights include the Rocas Atoll, one of the smallest atolls in the world, and the São Pedro and São Paulo Archipelago, one of the most isolated places on the planet; as well as the Cagarras Islands in Rio de Janeiro. The lecture will be guided by a rich collection of underwater images produced over 25 years of scientific diving.
Fernando holds a Bachelor’s degree in Marine Biology from the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), a Master’s and a PhD in Zoology from the Museu Nacional – UFRJ, and a Postdoctoral degree from the Instituto de Pesquisas Jardim Botânico do Rio de Janeiro (Rio de Janeiro Botanical Garden Research Institute). He has worked for over 25 years in the field of marine biodiversity scientific research, particularly in federal Conservation Units, using Scientific Diving as one of his primary work tools. He has published more than 60 scientific papers on the marine biodiversity of regions such as Brazilian oceanic and coastal islands, and the coral reefs of the Abrolhos Bank, the mouth of the Doce River, and the mouth of the Amazon River. In 2022, he joined the team of researchers on the DISCOVER expedition, carried out in the islands of Cape Verde aboard the R/V Antea (IFREMER). Currently, he serves as the Scientific Coordinator for the Projeto de Monitoramento de Ilhas Costeiras (Coastal Islands Monitoring Project), focusing on the rocky shores of the Monumento Natural das Ilhas Cagarras (Cagarras Islands Natural Monument) in Rio de Janeiro.
