“Café com ciência” – 20 Mar

Café com Ciência seminar series | 20 mar | Ana Sousa | 11:30

Title: Blue Carbon Ecosystems and Climate Change: Friends or Enemies?

Blue carbon ecosystems are coastal wetlands that include seagrass beds, salt marshes and mangroves, distributed all over the globe. In this “Café com Ciência” we will discuss the importance of these ecosystems and how they influence and are influenced by global change, and what measures can be implemented to restore them, helping to ensure biodiversity and achieve international climate neutrality targets, with some examples from the Ria de Aveiro.

Name: Ana Sousa

Ana Sousa is an Assistant Researcher at CESAM-Centro de Estudos do Ambiente e do Mar and at the Department of Biology at the University of Aveiro, with a PhD in Biology (Ecology) from the University of Lisbon. Her research focuses on wetland ecology and conservation, biodiversity and coastal zone management. She has been investigating the functioning of coastal wetlands, in particular salt marshes and seagrass meadows, their resilience to multiple threats, namely climate change (role of Blue Carbon); the impact on ecosystem services; and conservation, renaturalization and restoration of ecosystems using Nature-Based Solutions.
