CIIMAR WATCH: A Coastal Monitoring Effort Connecting Ecosystems, Data, and People

In this presentation, we will introduce CIIMAR WATCH, a new strategic environmental monitoring program launched by CIIMAR in 2024. Bringing together 9 CIIMAR research teams and over 40 researchers, the initiative focuses on long-term monitoring of coastal and estuarine ecosystems in northern Portugal, particularly in two observatories: VIANA WATCH and PORTO WATCH. We will share how this interdisciplinary effort addresses major environmental challenges like climate change, pollution, and biodiversity loss through seasonal campaigns in 16 monitoring stations. CIIMAR WATCH also promotes science outreach and student training. Looking ahead, the program will integrate advanced technologies such as drones and real-time buoys to strengthen data collection and support open-access science and marine conservation.
