Studying the Biodiversity of Deep-Sea Fishes and How They Have Adapted to the Challenges of the World’s Largest Ecosystem.

The deep sea is one of the most extensive, stable, and least known environments on the planet. Permanent darkness, high pressure, low temperatures, and scarce resources create an extreme habitat that has historically been difficult to explore. From the first attempts using probes and dredges in the 19th century to recent advances with remotely operated vehicles, the history of research has been marked by significant technological challenges. In this environment, fishes represent one of the most remarkable groups due to their morphological and sensory adaptations: light organs, gelatinous bodies, extensible jaws, and specialized visual systems are just a few examples. These species are fundamental for understanding the functional limits of marine life and the role these ecosystems play in global biodiversity.
