GluMAR Project wins 2nd place in the BlueAct competition

The project uses macroalgae to create a supplement that helps control blood glucose levels

Researcher Graciliana Lopes (CIIMAR), together with Fátima Fernandes, Mariana Barbosa (UCIBIO/NOVA FCT), and Ricardo Cardoso (FEUP), won 2nd place in the BlueAct competition, organized by the Matosinhos City Council and UPTEC, with the project GluMAR – Innovative Marine Supplement for Glucose Control.

The final of the 5th edition of BlueAct took place on November 28 in Matosinhos, highlighting projects focused on innovation and sustainable development in the blue economy. Winners received a monetary prize, four months of incubation at UPTEC Mar, and access to the School of Startups.

The GluMAR project aims to use marine macroalgae to develop an innovative and functional dietary supplement designed to help control blood glucose levels, broadening nutritional options and improving the quality of life for people with diabetes. The project stands out for its combination of scientific rigor, innovation, and the use of underexplored bioactive compounds, offering a natural and safe solution for those interested in health and metabolic prevention.
